Some mics are built with one specific purpose in mind. Others are well rounded and can do more. The RØDE NT3 is a mic that falls into this category. I needed something that was going to be versatile, durable, and accurate. I didn’t want to spend an insane amount of money wanted something that was going to be simple to use. Since I’ve been using the NT1-a for a while and absolutely love it, I figured I would give the RØDE NT3 a try.
It fells well built, much like the other RØDE mics I’ve had a chance to use. The NT3 can be powered by a 9 volt battery or phantom power from your preamp. It is roughly 9 inches long and the bottom unscrews to access the battery compartment. The battery option is one that is great to have if you’re considering using this mic with a camera for video production. It’s durability and size make an excellent choice for a field mic. There is a power switch so you don’t have to remove the battery every time you use it.
I use this mic mostly for acoustic guitar and hand percussion. It Represents the high end very well with a lot of presence in the sound, and the design allows for good room ambiance. It actually records room and outdoor conversation pretty good. I imagine that this would be a great field mic for low-budget video production.
I think that this mic has multiple of uses in a home studio. It can be used to record any acoustic instruments, which is a plus, but it also sounds good when recording from slightly farther away. I like the way it sounds as a reinforcement mic.
The handbook suggests that the NT3 is suitable for a wide range of applications and I would concur that it is a versatile jack of all trades. It offers remarkable performance and capacitor-microphone sonic virtues at a very affordable price, and as such it redefines the term 'value for money'.
This is an amazing mic for the money. It's frequency response is absolutely flat, the mic electronics have very low self noise... The NT3 is a excellent value for the money and is solidly made.
Yes, we bought another four (NT3s). We're using them daily and they're extremely reliable. Our Sennheisers MD421 are out of business. We love the incredible high output.
I dropped it more than once, but because of its solid built, i found no dent on the grill,or any malfuctions what soever. Very cool mic to have on your arsenal.
I recently purchased an NT3 to replace the RØDE VideoMic for recording live video. I'm a keynote speaker and I video record all of my speeches.
The NT3's awesome sound has added more depth to my recordings. The ability to power with either a 9v or 48v phantom power makes this a flexible microphone for use in the field or in the studio ... I can slip the NT3 into the shoe mount on my video camera and go, or I can mount it on a boom pole over my talent in the studio.
Best of all, like all things RØDE, the price point is fantastic! Great quality for a decent price.
If you are looking at this mic, I'm sure you've already thought about the AKG C1000 and maybe the AT3040 mics. The NT3 is superior to both of these. As we all know, the C1000 is a great deal, but the sound of that mic is cheap, brittle and tinny. The NT3 will give you a crisp high end without sounding harsh. The NT3 has a pretty tight pattern with a great casing. It's durable and good looking, plus takes 9V power for field work.
I'm using this microphone to shoot video interviews with two people at once. I position the microphone between them and it's cardioid pattern picks up both of them just fine. Before I got this NT-3 cardioid I was using my NTG-2 shotgun for these interviews and I couldn't get the audio right. Now it's a cinch. I also like that it has an On/Off switch which should help to conserve battery life.
This microphone is a great workhorse mic around the studio. It works great for guitars, drum overheads, vocals, horns, and lots of other things. It is very sensitive so you get a lot of detail, but be careful around loud extra noises. It tends to pick up lots of room noises since it is so sensitve. It also performs very well as a field recording mic in a stereo pair or just mono. That is what I bought this mic for originally but I just keep finding more uses for it. Good buy at a great price.
